This talk contextualizes the charismatic current Pope amongst his predecessors and the institutional Roman Catholic Church’s legacies of colonization and normative gender ideologies. Research in this field is particularly crucial given the rise in far-right “Anti Gender [Ideology]” movements and the ongoing discovery of mass unmarked burial sites and Pope Francis’s subsequent 2022 visit to Canada. Dr. Dani Dempsey is a Teaching Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University who teaches in Gender and Women’s Studies and Religious Studies.
